TOUCH - The Tactile Sense

touchUnless you live in space, you are always touching something. Either passively (such as your feet on the floor) or actively (hugging another person). The tactile system works by receiving external information through millions of receptor cells in our skin. These receptors send the sensations to our brain which then interprets it for us. Is it pain? Light touch? Deep pressure? A temperature change? As large as our skin is (and if you’re like me, larger than others!) that’s how large our tactile sense is. We receive information continuously through touch about our environment and this information is essential for our daily functioning. It affects our awareness and regulation of our own body, motor planning skills, emotional well being and more.
